Recently purchased a used boat with a 150 mercury 2002 model. It worked fine for the first half hour
When I went to restart it beeps ingroups of 3.
Discovered it will stop beeps if motor is raised out of water.

Beep whether motor is running or not.

Ideas

Is this a 4 stroke motor.

I have guardian charts for both 2S and 4S models, but only see the "3 beeps" listed for 4 strokes.

The cause of 3 beeps could be -

low voltage at the battery, or,

a short (open hot line) somewhere in the key switch, or,

a bad fuel injector (but only if running - since you still get the beep "not running" can't be this) or,

a bad coolant sensor, or,

a fault with the Idle Air Control (IAC)

The motor is a 2 cycle...

Yes, oil, but should give you 4 beeps, not 3.

The 2 stroke guardian had three (modes) -

1 beep on start-up to tell you it's working; or

4 beeps for low oil or water in the fuel; and

continuous beep for overheat or oil pump failure

How about the fact that the beeps only beep when the motor is lowered,
they stop when raising it 45 degrees or more?

If it was low on oil, when the motor is lowered the tank would be in it's normal operating position and the sensor would read low oil.

When tilted the tank is now kinda sideways and it may then have enough oil in the "tilted" tank to read "sufficient".

That's just a guess, but sounds reasonable to me...
