2001 suzki 150hp shifting problem

"I have a 2001 150 hp suzuki that has a shifting problem. When I try to shift into forward, it makes a grinding noise and will not go into forward gear. It will go into reverse with out any problems. I took off the shift cable were it connects to the shifting lever on the motor and tried to shift it manually it would not shift into forward. A short time ago I replaced the shift and throttle cables and was wondering if that might be the problem? If you have any ideas please let me know.

"I would check the fluid, make sure there isn't too much metal shavings in the oil that could be bad for gears. Also check the oil level, could be that you've lost a seal and are leaking oil."
