Considering buying 2001 Opti's. All updatess were done(according to the seller)Hours are 532 port and 597 starboard.

Option 2 is 2001 EFI's with around 270 hours each. Ive heard the EFI's are bullett proof but absolutely love to drink gas.

They are going on a 31 Fountain. My current 93 200's provide 20GPH Total at 40 mph cruise. At WOT (54) they drink 18 GPH Each. Would I still be in this range?

I have heard quotes as much as 45% difference in fuel consumption between the two.

Which would you choose and why? The Optis are 1K cheaper than the EFI's.

"Richard, can give you a few details from items I have read etc.

In a side by side comparison 200 horse carburated/200 Opti, the difference in gas consumpion at idle was 3 gph for carbs/1 gph for DFI - of course the EFI is better on fuel than the carb models, but you get the idea.

So from a fuel standpoint the Opti is better, also just as quiet as a four stroke.

On the other hand, the Opti's are very hard on plugs, often need replacing every 50 hours or so - at upwards of 15 bucks a piece, 6 plugs get expensive if you will use the boat alot.

From a service point of view, both motors are fairly "high tech" - so neither is really a "shade tree" mechanics motor to work on, outside of normal/yearly (impellers, plugs etc).

Aside from the initial problems with the opti's, most of the Merc mechanics I have talked with have lot's of good things to say about them.

The opti's will weigh in at about 1050 pounds for the pair, the EFI come in about 150 pounds less - but at nearly 1000 pounds anyhow, what's an extra 100 hanging off the back).

Personally, I like the DFI engines and my next "new" motor will be one, either a Merc or a Tohatsu - but that's a personal choice based on alot of reading/asking/opinion gathering.

Whichever you choose, I would first have them hooked up to a computer at a dealer and see what it spits out - just to see what you are buying..."
