2001 model 25hp struggles to get on a plane

Hi I just bought a 14ft aluminium tinny with a 25hp johnson, it starts and runs great however it struggles to get on a plane, I have been out numberous times and with only 2 adults it takes ages (if it does) to level out. Not sure what I should be looking at first as this is my first outboard, is there a maintenance schedule I should be carrying out? I do the normal stuff like flushing the motor after use etc but dont know what else I should be doing.

Thanks for your help

Try moving the tilt-pin at the bracket one hole closer to transom. However check out that you carb opens fully when in full throttle and that the timing goes all the way to the rubber stop.

Hi,

@ racerone It's a 2 cyclinder.

@ haffiman37 I just a had a bit of a play with it, found that the thottle plate was over adjusted so when it was on full noise it would actually restrict air flow, so I have backed it off a bit, not sure if this is the whole problem though. Checked the timing and it does go all the way to the rubber stop.

Thanks Guys

Hopefully you adjusted at the correct place: The stopper on the steel rod from carb to the 'vertical' arm. Just give full throttle (engine not running but in gear), then adjust so the throttle plate opens 99,9%.
