"My 01' Johnson 150hp star

"My 01' Johnson 150hp starts fairly easy both cold and warm, runs smooth at RPM and idles okay most of the time. However, when the throttle is advanced quickly (like when pulling up a skier)it stumbles and dies. If you "baby" the throttle open it'll accelerate with somewhat of a miss and then run smoothly to RPM (if you haven't drowned the skier first) This engine has done this since new but is definatly getting worse. When new the dealer said it was normal due to the "lack of accelerator pumps on the carbs" and would go away with operating time. Anyone else experience this? What's the fix? I'm a relatively experienced amature auto/motorcycle mechanic but haven't been around marine engines much."

Can the carbs be richened a little? or are they set. Sounds like they are a little lean.

"Thanks for the response, look

"Thanks for the response, looked a while back and jets are set as I recall. I agree that the engine seems too lean. However it will load-up infrequently and have to be revved in nuetral to clear the plugs (with lots of smoke occuring)"

"The carbs should have an adju

"The carbs should have an adjustable idle needle. The needle screws into the throttle body, and is accessed through a hole in the lower starboard front of the plastic carb body. it does sound more like the timing roller, but if that doesn't cure it, give each needle 1/8 CCW to see if it improves. Mine doesn't stall, and it doesn't really load up either."

Thanks for the tip and we'

Thanks for the tip and we'll check it out over the weekend and see what we got. I'll post the report back to this thread.

"Very much appreciate the help

"Very much appreciate the helpful advice from everyone. jwbmarine hit it right on the nose. The throttle timing roller was backed all the way off just as in the first photo on the link he suggested. It literally took 5 minutes to adjust the arm to the position in the third photo and now she jumps out of the hole without missing a lick. Can't believe I've put up with that stumbling since the boat was brand new! Further, can't believe the dealer who sold me the boat didn't fix the problem after two trips to his shop and one to the lake with me?? He just made excuses. Skiing with the family will certainly be much more enjoyable in the future. Thanks again!!"
