Hey guys , this engine has been sitting on the boat since 2008 and ran perfectly at that time (parked due to hole in boat) . My cousin is trying to get the engine fired up, but the starter won't engage. After digging around, he found lots of corroded wires. We just want to bypass all the harness and run new wires direct to fire it up and then we'll get a new harness and do it correctly. The starter can be jumped with a screwdriver but it just spins and doesn't engage. Thanks in advance. ..Dimitri

If it is not a bad starter....the battery cables themselves may have deteriorated internally. They may look fine, but the wires may be almost gone.

May also have a bad battery.

Connect a voltmeter between the ground on the engine and the positive post on the starter (where the battery cable connects). Watch the voltage as you try to jump start the motor. If it goes below 10 - 10.5 volts or so, then you have too much voltage drop. Then do the same test by putting the voltmeter on the positive and negative posts on the battery. The voltage should stay pretty close to 12v. If it drops to the 10v or so....then it is the battery. If the voltage stays up, then it is one or both of the battery cables or connections.

Make sure that the battery terminals are clean and wrench tight.
