2001 90hp johnson tight shift

I had the power head off last Friday replacing the power head to mid unit gasket, got everything back together for trip to the lake Saturday all was good till I went to throttle up. Engine acted like it was skipping then cut off. Put shifter in neutral restarted engine when I went to put it in forward the shifter was tight. When I got to the house I checked shift rod offset it is pointed to front with rod disconnect shifter is nice and smooth like it always has been. I pulled LU off to check to rod for bends no bends. If I spin the prop as I push or pull the rod it does fine most of the time every now and then it will not engage at first and I have to release and pull or push it again before it engages. I believe that is causing my tight shift. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Motor has to be running or propshaft MUST be turning when trying to shift this motor.-----Turning the shift rod changes the adjustment.-----Shift rod is to be set to a specified height before installation.

Did this engine shift normally "before" you removed the powerhead?

Did you also have the lower unit removed for some reason?

Only the power head was removed shifted normal before did not mess with shift linkage or cables only removed end link on top of rod. I do have the LU removed now to check the height on rod.

Racerone I took care to make sure not to turn the rod while it was disconnected and issue started while motor was runner. That's what is confusing me on it

The shift rod normally disconnects via removing the clip (Jesus Pin) and pushing the shift linkage towards the port side. No need to be removing anything. Something is not proper at that previous removed linkage I'm thinking... unless something by coincidence went floozy with the lower unit.

I'm trying to find the height chart to check that before I reinstall the LU I have a J90VLSIC from that I know it a 20" shaft but only finding height chart for 120to and up or 75hp or lower any idea on my height.
