Two ways to find out about this. Nominal lengths are 15, 20, and 25 inches. These Japanese motors run about 1-3/4 inches long, BTW, so actual lengths are more like 17, 22, and 27 inches.
Method 1- Ask Tohatsu America at
http://www.tohatsu.com/contact.html and they can tell you what the original shaft length was from the factory.
Method 2- Measure the distance from the top of the transom (inside the transom clamp) to the antiventilation plate. Of course, if a previous owner changed shaft length, this actual measurement is the definitive number.
On a power boat, the ideal rig places the antiventilation plate parallel to the water, and in line with the bottom of the transom, +/- about 1 inch. Higher is faster, lower is slower. On a sail vessel, the LU is typically rigged much lower, as high speeds are not a consideration, but keeping the prop and water intake in the water during porpoising is important.
