"First I would like to say Thank You to the many contributors of this forum. I have owned out/board boats for 20 years and have had friends with in boards, but this is my first. I have referred to this sight many times and have learned quite a bit from your replies.

I own a 1988 Tiara 3300 Open with a small Marlin tower. Before my ownership the boat was re powered in 2001 with Crusader 8.1 MPI. I bought the boat in Oct of 05 with 200 hours on the engines and am now up to 350 hrs. I have been generally happy with their performance. After fixing a Floscan a few months back, I noticed the Port was using 2 gal per hr more than the Strb at cruise. I know that’s not right. Switched sensors on the Floscan and the problem did not follow. Props were reconditioned for another reason, but no change in fuel usage.

I purchased the Diacom software to see live data produced by the ECM (MEFI 4) on my lap top and compare the engines performance in real time to each other. There is a Power Balance test included. This allows you to “Turn off” one cylinder at a time to see if there is a change in RPM. No change in RPM equals no contribution from that cylinder. My #2 and #6 firing order cylinders showed no change to RPM when disabled.

Pull the wires and heard plenty of spark. Pulled the plugs and they look normal. (Only 50 hours on them) I moved those plugs to other cylinders and re tested. The problem did not follow the move. Now I’m thinking fuel injectors.

I fill a small can with gas and added Sea foam. Ran the engine for about 1.5 hours. Retested. Now the # 2 and #6 show a 50 rpm drop when disabled. I think I'm on the right track with this positive result. I plan to run some more injector cleaner thru the system. I have read the tech manual on how to remove and replace injectors. This might be more than I want to tackle on my own. Should I look for a mechanic on this? Will cleaner handle the problem? Can they be cleaned or do they need replacing? You advice is greatly appreciated."

have u changer the fuel filter yet?
do u have a water separator also?

"Good call on the filter Changed the Fuel Filter. Minor amount of dirt, no water. It was changed last one year ago, about 75 hours since then.

I ran a second treatment with SeaFoam. There in marked improvment. When the injectors in question are turned off, you can see a 175 to 200 RPM drop.

I am running a treatment of SeaFoam thru the Strb engine just to be thurough.

BTW what to you consider a "Shock" treatment of SeaFoam? I have used one can in 3gl of fuel. Let the engine run at 900 to 1000 RPM till fuel was gone."

"After three treatments with no more improvement, I did a compression test on all cyliders just to rule that out. 201 to 205 psi was the result. This is high compared to the spec,(130 to 175 psi) but very consistant. Not sure if that is a problem or not.

I found a place in Ft Lauderdale that cleans injectors. Pulled all 8 last night. I could not beleive the junk that came out. I should get them back by Friday. I will let you know how it works out."

Very impressive analysis work

Very impressive analysis work on your part! Wanna work on mine? Please!

"Thanks Fastjeff

I reinstalled injectors last night. Primed the system. She started right up. Smooth idle. After warm up, I turn on the scan tool. All parameters are in spec. Idle air control, fuel flow are normal. Now side by side with the Strb, she idles a little smoother and at 2000 RPM she is more consistent.

Just for parody I will treat the Strb with the same injector cleaner, and then send the injectors out for cleaning.

Cleaning process includes removing the screen, ultra sonic bath with injectors actuated, flow test, new O rings and screen. $20 bucks each. It is suspected that water in the fuel over time caused what appear to be rust particles to clog 3 of the injectors. One was completely blocked the other two had some improvement after Sea Foam treatment.

I'm going for a shake out run today and then fishing tomorrow. Problem solved. This feels good!"

Shake out run was great. She ran strong at all RPM from cruise to WOT. Suggested WOT is 4600 rpm and I was able to get her to 4585. I was not able to determine WOT before due to inaccurate Tachs. The Engine software provides a digital read out straight from the ECM. All other sensors were normal. She gets up on plane a lot easier now as well.
