Thx, Im looking forward to find out some more info on this engine, they are big for 50 hp :)

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

well as I hoped its like everything it has a drain and fill - full bung. So 70/90 is going in. :)
Is there any need to know things about the 01 bighfoot 50hp ? Can you get more power out of them ??
thx

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

Well surfed the web a bit and it seems there is a restricter plate on the carbs, assuming its between the manifold and carbs . I will be looking into this once I get back from fishing.
info please,,,,,, rejet ?

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

I have no idea about your brand of oil over there but I would strongly suggest that you put in a marine grade, lower unit oil,any marine store,wal-mart,if it's ordinary auto oil it's not reccommended if water gets in.Don't know about these motors, mines forty one this year

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

As long as your oil has a "GL-5" rating it will work. If not even minimal water intrusion into the lower unit can cause it to foam up and blow the seals out of the lower unit - that's really not a good thing :)

The 50 bigfoot has low gears and was meant to "push weight" as opposed to reach "high speed".

I'm not sure what "restricter" plate you read about - there is an "attenuator" plate on the carbs, but that is to help keep powerhead noise down, nothing to do with (de-horsing) the engine.

Also, it's more than just jets that are different, the carb body is not the same.

And then there is the "why bother" factor.

To see a 15% performance improvement, and only in top speed if the displacement is the same, you need to increase your horsepower by 50%.

Going from 50 to 60 horses is only a 20% horse increase, so on a perfect day would result in a whopping 6% increase in top speed.

And, if you live in the US it is "illegal" to change the horsepower of a recreational outboard. And while you might never get caught if anything ever happened that was investigated, you can be sure that the coast guard and/or insurance companies will find some way to blame your altered motor for accident - even if the boat was t-boned while sitting on a trailer in the parking lot...

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

Well thx for the info. My trip was great, I think my carbs are alittle dirty from old gas over the years. bad me. it would die on me will trolling, not all the time but enough that it is obveious the carbs need cleaning and maybe adjustment. I will clean first. Can I use decarbonizer - carb cleaner through the fuel system like in a car ? BTW I will be doing it w the leg in a drum not the lake as this stuff (V.I.C) relealy makes things smoke.

Re: 01 50hp bigfoot

Most gas additives are great "preventatives" but often do little once a problem develops.

But since they won't hurt and might even buy you some time if the clog isn't too bad, for the couple of bucks, give it a shot.

Regardless of whether or not you end up pulling/cleaning the carbs, spend 5 more bucks and get a can of Merc's "Power Tune" and just follow the directions. It won't unclog the carbs but does clean all the carbon and other cooties out of the reeds, crankcase, cylinders, pistons - and to some extent, the exhaust housing.
