2001 350 mag MPI detonating misfiring

"I am having problems with my 2001 350 MPI engine. in fact have had problems since putting it in my boat.

basically I have the issue of a minor instant loss of power say every 10-30 seconds typically when it is up over about 3000 rpm. it just does it for an instant.

recently on a couple of trips coming back in rough weather it has all of a sudden started missing real bad and losing power and making the 'pinking' or detonation noise when over 2000 rpm, so I have had to travel back slowly. its like suddenly the distributor has been moved to make it run real bad. when it is left to rest it comes right again.

I have also noted that my fuel has some water so will need to remove the tank and clean it, but would like to find out what the bigger problem is first as I hope this may be linked to the more minor miss that occurs.

Anyone come across this? can water in the fuel cause the detonation ??"

Ayuh,... Absolutely, a Lean condition will Quickly induce detonation...

Fix your fuel system,+ your problem will likely be Gone as well..."

"Maybe run it on a external tank of fresh gas, maybe six gallons, and see if that fixs it then you will have convinced yourself thats the problem.

I am assuming that the motor is timed correctly?"
