2001 25HP No Spark

Hey all,

I’ve got a 2001 25HP
Model 25EL
Serial 0T310530 (I included the serial because I can’tfigure out how to distinguish between the 3 different 25EL’s listed inboats.net when looking for parts)
Anyhow, I went from firing right up to a couple weeks laterhaving no spark.
Let me try to preemptively answer as many of the questionsany of you might throw at me. As well asjust listing as much info that may be useful.

  1. Theboat is stored on a dry dock but is sitting on brackish/salt water. Socorrosion is always a battle.
  2. Iam educated and employed in the field of electrical and electronics testingetc. But finding correct data on acceptable resistance or voltage drop oncomponents on this motor seems to be few and far between.
  3. Ihave checked and repaired or replaced all visible connections from theswitchbox to the starter solenoid, starter, rectifier, coils, kill switch, etc.
  4. Ihave tested both the kill switch and the neutral safety switch. As well aschecked for spark after bypassing them and manually defeating them.
  5. BecauseI could not get much info, I purchased a new switchbox in hopes of itcorrecting the issue, but still had no spark.
  6. Andyes…… just to make sure I wasn’t shooting myself in the foot, I swapped thespark plugs themselves lol.
  7. I’mnot sure what kind of values I should see when testing the stator, trigger andcoils. So any help on those would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has awiring schematic on this motor, that would be helpful.
Obviously fresh eyes and brains can help and can sometimespoint out the simple things someone has missed.
So I’m open to suggestions and even some smart ass commentslol.

You need to check the voltage coming from the stator with a DVA meter (my new favorite tool). You can purchase (about 30 bucks on Amazon) an adapter for your meter.

The problem will jump out at you.

Thanks Jeff,
DVA will be here tomorrow (god bless prime)
Since I understand electrical and am just a intermediate mechanic, it usually takes me looking at parts and tracing before I can figure out how they all work together. Does the stator put out AC voltage ? Otherwise I wasn't sure why there would be a rectifier after the stator between it and the battery. I'm assuming it rectifies voltage to DC to keep the battery charged. But I could be completely wrong there. Haven't done any research on that aspect. Anyhow, with that DVA, what should I be reading and what would be acceptable vs low etc ?

..."Does the stator put out AC voltage ?"

Read on DC

..."Otherwise I wasn't sure why there would be a rectifier after the stator between it and the battery. I'm assuming it rectifies voltage to DC to keep the battery charged."

Correct.

..."...with that DVA, what should I be reading and what would be acceptable vs low etc ? "

You need to look that info up on CDI's troubleshooting page (on line).
