2001 225 hp 'Rude Ram

I have a 2001 225 H.O. 'Rude Ram that blew on me last year. I found a brand new powerhead (not remanufactured) and bought it. Found out that it was a powerhead for a 200 hp. some years they are the same powerhead and some they aren't. The part number stamped on the plug on the block is 484465. I found out that that number has been changed to 484761 by Evinrude. From what I've found is that the part numbers from dealers on the internet is for the 200hp is OM-PL6-18-R and for the 225/250 is OM-PL6-19-R. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 2? I have a BIG power loss!

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

If you go to shop.evinrude.com, you should be able to see breakdowns of the different motors. You can see what parts are different. You say the block is a different part number? are they both 3.3L, or did the 200 remain a 3.0L? other than that, the porting may be slightly different.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

They are both 3.3L powerheads. I heard that the porting might be the only difference, if any at all. I couldn't find ant documentation on it at all. I have a serious decrease in top end speed due to 50 less hp. I was hoping there might be something I could do to increase the power without having to tear down my practically brand new powerhead. I will check the website you suggested. Any other help you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated. Oh, by the way, my boat is a 20SS Extreme and the 225 H.O. would run 76 mph at 5600 rpms. Now between 55-60 mph at 5600 rpms. Just wondering if maybe there was something I could do to get SOME of my power back without tearing down that powerhead until it gets a few more hours on it. I appreciate any help!

Go to www.advancedsleeve.com and look up the sleeve PNs for the two engines in question. If they are the same, there is no porting difference. Very quickly looking, it seems there are different sleeve PNs for the two, but I didn't check thoroughly.
Leaving that to you.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

Thank you, daselbee. That's what one mechanic told me, but an Evinrude DEALERSHIP couldn't tell me. Makes you wonder about their work. The mechanic also told me the only issue that it would cause is a little flooding. He said there might be some things he could do to restore some of my power without a re-build. We'll see. Any other opinions on things that might help, let me know. Thanks!

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

It is WAY OUT of my area of knowledge....this must be a fuel injected engine, right?
But I have studied part number lists and parts explosion pages, and I did notice that Evinrude changes the WHOLE BLOCK part number when there is only a sleeve port difference. Evinrude doesn't have PNs for the sleeves, they just list the whole block.
You sorta gotta figure it out by looking at aftermarket suppliers' listings.

Hope you get it right. That is a lot of power loss, and must be disappointing.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

All is not 'lost'.
Try to get a blue-print of the ports from a 225 block, then a Dremel and 'some' work, and you are up in power again.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

Yeah it is disappointing, daselbee. And, yes, it is fuel injected. Hoping htere is something that can be done to get at least PART of it back. Yeah haffiman, it's not a major thing, except a mechanic tells me it requires a complete tear down and rebuild and it's practically a brand new powerhead. I should have checked closer to make sure it was a 225 H.O. powerhead like it was supposed to be.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

If you keep on running with a 225 ECM program on your 200 block, you will soon be there anyway.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

Why is that, haffiman? will it damage the powerhead in some way? So far , all that anyone could tell me is that it causes some minor flooding. What else might it do?

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

Short, you will be running too rich.
That means increased carbon due to unburned fuel (and oil).
Fouled plugs, stuck rings, just a question of time.

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

Is there nothing else I can do without a complete tear down and rebuild, haffiman? Even if I don't get any of my power back, I don't want to damage that brand new powerhead. Any suggestions?

Re: 225 'Rude Ram

If not 're-working' the power head, only 2 possibilities.
1. Re-program your ECU. For that you need a valid engine mod and serial from a 'scrapped' 200.
2. Buy/borrow an ECU from a 200, same model year as your power head.
