I have a Mercury 225 EFI that doesn't want to lock into gear when it warms up. It will clunk a couple of times then go into gear and run fine until I put it neutral. It doesn't do this everytime but I'm afraid it let me down before long. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I always put it gear without any hesitation. When its cold it goes into gear fine but when it warms up I can tell when I put into gear that shifter is mushy.
Is the adjustment on the shifter box or at the engine.

"I found the installation manual and made a small adjustment on the cable at the engine. I did notice that shifter was binding in the slotted piece that the cable hooks to. So I put a little grease around it and that made it shift alot smoother. I will have it out this week to try it.
I did notice that the shifter rod that runs from the upper shift arm down to the lower unit has alot of up and down play in it. I can see about a 1/4 of an inch of the splines on the shaft, is this normal.
Thanks"

"I have a 200 HP Mercury 2 stroke, 1996. The reverse shift is not going in and if I shift hard it will go in but then the revs are way up. I assume it is an adjustment to the shifter but how is the adjustment made? Is there any diagrams? I have a Mercury Manual but I see no reference to this problem The unit shifter works fine in forward."
