"This weekend the engine began what I call an 'octane' ping above 2000 rpms. I added octane booster, etc. Still there, then it started missing on one cylinder. This one is carburated. Will a tuneup fix it or do I have something more serious to fix this. There is no permanent knock or ping at 2k rpm or below. Please help"

"Steven, I would check the plugs, cap and rotor but also check out the knock sensor located on the starboard side of the lower block."

Thanks for the response. What

Thanks for the response. What the heck is the knock sensor? What am I looking for? If it got wet could it have gone bad? I failed to remove my drain plug last summer when the rains started and there was enough water in the boat to ruin the starter. Obviously the boat was covered.. lol

The knock sensor is screwed in

The knock sensor is screwed into the engine block on the starboard side water jacket. It sends a signal to the ECU if it feels the engine knocking and effectively retards the timing to prevent pinging. It shouldn't get damaged by wetness but maybe your wiring is bad or the sensor is bad. I replaced mine in the same year engine after 5 seasons. If you send me your email address I can send you some pictures that the server wouldn't let me upload.

Give me a few minutes to look up the specs for the plugs and I'll send them your way by email along with some more pictures.
