Hey guys...got an 18 foot Cuddy Walk around this week with a 125 long shaft Saltwater Merc and just wanted to check in for the ins and outs of this motor from those in the know...Ive heard they are pretty damn robust motors. Loud as heck when WOT but otherwise SEEMS to run well...Some times it feels a little surgy but maybe the carbs need to be synced? or maybe just because it sat a long time in the garage>?

What would be a great fuel additive to put in with the first couple fuel tanks just to "clean things up"

Thanks

Jason

I ran it again yesterday and it seemed to run cleaner plus I put 91 in instead of 85 that the other guy says he runs and part of the noise is gone...wondering if it was detonation or something...who knows...All I know is it is turn key and that makes me very happy

Could be a bit of detonation due to carbon build up.

Stop by any Merc dealer and spend 5 bucks on a can of "PowerTune" and just follow the directions on the can - it will get all the carbon and other cooties out in very short order.

This particular model has what some call a 2+2 ignition system. Basically from idle to about 1800 rpms or so you are only getting "power" from 2 cylinders - after that point (but it's not a specific rpm - just a range) all 4 kick in.

That transition going up and down can seem a little (violent or bumpy) - that is totally normal but often causes concern if you are not used to it.

I put 91 in it and have probably put 5 trips on it now and must say it runs great now with some better octane...I was suspicious that it may have been detonation from old cheap gas. Also discovered part of the rattle I heard is a washer on the steering arm by the outboard...

Motor runs great but I will get this power tune stuff you speak of next time im at the local shop.
