"Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem may be. Have a 2000 Merc 5 hp 4 stroke. Only about 5 hours on it. Properly maintained, really only used as insurance in case big motor goes down. Anyway, it started last time out with choke pulled out, but it ran at full rpm with choke out. As soon as i pushed choke in, it stalled. Did that 3 times in a row and then wouldnt start again. Just was winterizing it. And same thing. Pulled plug and the tip is wet. cleaned it off and it will start for a second and stall. It's also backfiring each time I pull the starter rope. Any suggestions? Thanks."

"Well it sounds like you have a dirty carb ie: the slow speed jet is clogged up or both jets are clogged up.The jets in the 4 strokes are so small it real hard to get them to clean up without a good soaking. You can try carb cleaner if it will run at all.If not pull the carb for a good soak, One note no rubber or plastic in the carb cleaner.
you need a carb kit to put it back together.
