i was changing my lower unit fluid and when i went to put my lower drain plug back in it would not
tighten up. the threads in the lower unit are stripped out. i was*searching on google to find out*a
fix for my problem and someone said to put an earlier model drain plug in because it is longer and
catch threads that were not stripped.
i have a 2000 merc 50 hp*if someone could tell me*what*year has the longer drain plug or*tell me a*
part number*that would be great

any other ideas for a fix would be great too

thanks *

You can use a common 3/8 coarse thread screw. Get several lengths (1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch long) with a Phillips or slotted head and screw the shortest one in that will hold. If NONE will hold, then the threads are stripped out. Your option then is to retap it to 7/16 coarse and use a 7/16th screw.

I went and bought a bunch of 3/8 stainless machine screws ,chased the threads, and got one to hold
now i can go fishing next weekend:cool:
