2000 merc 3.0 alpha one funny noise

Hello

I finally took out my cheap auction boat for a rip for the first time in a while. The engine runs fine, get on plane etc, everything you want, but with one exception. There is a slight whistling noise that varies with rpm. Sounds very similar to a turbo, but unfortunately I dont have a turbo:mad:. any ideas what this is caused by? I ran it on ears and no turbo. on the water, it has a turbo. the sound is barely audible. maybe its the drive unit. i will change the oil there anyway. any ideas appreciated
 
ok. I just drained the oil yesterday and ran two tanks of fuel through it. no loss of power, same whistling noise. I will assume it is normal. oh yeah I forgot to say that I filled it up again too, as well as drain and change engine oil and filter. the oil was clean and the drain screw was almost clean
 
Alpha one's can and do make a "whine" from the outdrive. Mine does and has for over 20 years...
