"I agree it is at the top of the shift rod, i can see where the rod enters the cowling, under the motor, but for the life of me can't find anything to disconnect. I can see the rod move if I move the lower unit so I know that is the key, I just can't find how."

"your picture appears to be right on, but if so the screw #26 is under the motor, something will have to come off to get to it, the starter is above it and then fuel lines, etc. it's raining so I will try again later. it really is in a tough spot."

"When I took an outboard repai

"When I took an outboard repair course last year at the local community college, the instructor had us drop the lower unit on several different brands of outboards. My group worked on a Yamaha.

If I'm remembering correctly, the group of students working on the Johnson motor had a heck of a time figuring out how to get at the shift rod screw to disassemble it ... and spent almost as much time figuring out how to reconnect it.

So ... good luck! You may have to remove more than you'd like to get where you need to get."

"Thanks for the help, for clos

"Thanks for the help, for closure and advice to anyone else who follows this thread. I had to remove the air intake, the starter, and fuel pump to get to the set screw, which was actually a 7/16 bolt that was mounted from the bottom versus the side. I also had to disconnect the linkage on the side (part 67 on the link) and pull part 88 away from the motor.
Thanks Again, your help saved hours of headaches."
