2000 Johnson 60 - Cooling issue

Hi All,

I have a 2000 Johnson 60 hp two-stroke outboard which had a shredded impeller at the start of last summer. This was replaced, but I think there are rubber fragments throughout the cooling system now. Shortly after the impeller replacement the tell-tale slowed to a trickle...the motor ran fine one trips like that, then the over-temp warning came on. We blew the tell-tale piping out and got it back to a solid stream, but the over heating continued off-and-on throughout the next few trips...one day would be fine but the next would be terrible.

We use the boat mainly for water-skiing, so it's pretty well flat out all the time when we use it... It doesn't overheat when just cruising etc. Over it's life, it's not had all that much use and has been flushed with fresh water every time after use.

Can anyone advise how to clear the rest of the fragments out? Is there something we can run through the cooling water or is it possible to remove the cover on the water jackets to clean it out?

Thanks,

Thomas

The shredded impeller encounter can be a nightmare... hopefully you are one of the lucky ones and the pieces have acculated in the thermostat area.

The worse case scenario is having to remove the cylinder head to clean out the water passageways, and also removing the lower unit so that one can shove a hooked end single strand steel wire up the water tube to dig for any possible impeller pieces lodged up there.

Hi All,

Thanks for the info!

I'm not at all keen on removing the cylinder head...I'll start with the thermostat. Is there anything to watch out for when opening it?

Have a grip on the thermostat housing when you remove the last bolt so that any springs do not go flying off into the wild blue yonder.

Some success! Opened the thermostat housing, few bits of rubber stuff sitting inside on the cylinder head side and lots more on the other side of the thermostat. I pulled them all out with tweezers, then ran some water straight through and collected it in a bucket - got a few more pieces out that way.

I'd say there's probably more in the system but I'll renew the thermostat/diapraghm while I'm here and hopefully there's enough of them removed that it works a bit better, but only a day on the water will tell me that.

Thanks!

Sounds like you may be one of the lucky ones.

In the future, keep that impeller away from the rubber loving fish! :)
