My motor has been banging in reverse under load, getting worse, cant use reverse now except in idle speed without banging, I suspected the "lugs" on the gear face and dog, I removed the prop, bearing carrier and reverse gear already while the LU is still attached to the motor, and as suspected the lugs are very rounded over and can see the mating surface on the "dog" is also rounded over and angled badly, so needing to replace them,
So I'm needing to replace my reverse gear so far . But am having trouble removing the prop-shaft, I would like to inspect the dog-clutch as I can see it's also worn but cannot remove the prop-shaft, I'm thinking the shift linkage is the culprit? can this be done without removing the LU or will I need to remove it? I've searched the web for answers but to no avail, The model #J50PLSSM.
Thanks in advance.

well got it all apart, who ever did the impeller (previous owner?) bent the shift rod:mad: and the seals for the pump were dry rotted beyond belief, glad I did disassemble it. nor-wonder it stated to pop out of reverse and got worse. The clutch dog looks good but gonna replace it with the reverse gear. I'll say one thing, Lower-units are much easier then motorcycle gear boxes, much less gears and shift forks...lol. Now to see if it goes back together as easy?
