2000 Johnson 4hp stopping

We bought a used 2000 Johnson

We bought a used 2000 Johnson 4hp last week and tried it out that weekend. It started fine but kept stopping. We finnaly got it into gear and were running full throtle when it started slowing down untill it stopped. It acted like it was not getting fuel. We checked the tank and it was still full. any ideas on what is wrong would be appreciated. Thank you.

"have you checked fuel filter? what do you know about the motor was it stored, if so the carb float and needle valve may be sticking due to fuel being left in. fuel goes bad after awhile and gums up, also check fuel line for leaks if they are older they may be leaking, does the pump hold pressure? check these out may be you just need to clean the carb or replace a filter or line. I'm no expert but after reading your post I checked my motor manuel and these are the most common reasons the manuel gives in the trouble shooting guide. cant hurt to try. good luck"
