2000 Johnson 200hp lower unit problem

Engine stays in reverse even when you start engine. I have removed the control cable at the engine and shifted it manually and it still stays in reverse. Noticed that the control lever at the engine moves too freely. I believe that the control rod going into the lower unit is either broken or has come loose. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? I have never taken the lower unit off of this engine and need some advice on how to disassemble it. I am mechanicly inclined. I would like to thank anyone who responds to this post.

The first thing to done is go out and get a service manual for your motor, It will give you step by step on how to remove your lower unit, and how to inspect it.
try a good aftermarket manual. the omc manuals can sometime be hard to work from.
