2000 johnson 130 oceanrunner steering question

Hi,
i am fairly new to boat ownership, i noticed the other day that there is a steering part on my motor that is rusty and i cant find any information about it.
It connects the steering arm to the motor. I have searched high and low for this part or even whether i should mess with it. The pictures shows the part i am talking about. It is rusted right where it bolts onto the motor bracket, in left side of the image you can see the steering arm. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well it is a part worth about $400.00 and it is not a 10 minute job to replace it.----------------If you run in salt water then it is the least of your worries.

Ok, thanks for the help. I do run in saltwater, so if it is the least of my worries then what is the most of my worries. haha I was just afraid that it would break on me one day when im on the water. I couldnt really tell how thick the piece of metal was to determine if it was just superficial surface rust.

It is a fairly hefty piece.--------------------------Look it up on ---------shop.evinrude.com---------- year / model / etc and then on --------midsection--------------

It looks like that on everyones engine. Most people don't worry about it unless it gets really thin. Might not hurt to hit it with some decent anti-rust spray occasionally.

That steering arm has worried various boaters since it came into production back in the late 1960s, but there has never been a record of one breaking. If one does, or has ever broken, I'd really like to see a picture of it (I'm not going to hold my breath waiting) :)

Yes, that part has a tendency to rust. Some rust fairly bad. Take a chisel, sharp pointed punch, some tool of your choosing, and a hammer, then chip the rust away. Blow it off with compressed air, then wipe it down with either lacquer thinner or acetone. Now, spray it thoroughly with Green Zink Chromate primer (available at your dealership) and finish up with the proper color spray paint.

To replace that part..... Remove the powerhead, remove the lower unit, remove the long exhaust housing assembly from the transom swivel bracket. Now, remove the large nut from the bottom portion of the steering bracket (the bracket includes a splined tube that extends down thru the swivel bracket). Disconnect the steering from the steering bracket. Now, you can slide the steering bracket up and out. Soooooo what kind of tool are you going to chip away with? :)
