"friend has trouble with motor

"friend has trouble with motor,will run fine wot for 10 to 20 minutes,then will start missing and dies at any rpm above 1200.will run at 1000 rpm all day.while it was running bad I pumped the fuel ball,no change,boats fuel line and all filters replaced this year, I felt the pee stream and it was not hot.no alarms on dash. HE feels this is a fuel pump/vro issue.I think this is a electrical,possible a pack issue.THANKS TED"
 
I suppose you could hook up a

I suppose you could hook up a timing light and observe what spark is doing on the cylinders.Hook up 4 of them if you can find/borrow them.

"First thing is to look at the spark plugs (wet/dry/gooey/ burnt/all look the same?) AND check the compression. Also, clean any water out of fuel filter."

"I recently had similar problems with a 140HP, 1980 Johnson. I am not familar with the VRO engines, but I did replace my fuel pump and coils/powerpack and still had the same problems you are listing. Finally replaced the stator and timing bracket/coil and this seems to have rectified the stalling. Looks like these parts when they get hot fail, my stator actually was leaking and the timing bracket had a small crack. Really not that difficult to replace."
