2000 Honda 50Hp Acceleration Issue

"Bought this motor from a frie

"Bought this motor from a friend. The motor has not been in the water for the past year. It ran fine before being put away. Don't know if the fuel was run out before storage, but my friend thiks he did run it dry. Before launching this past weekend, I changed the fuel lines, water separator, plugs, oil and gear lube. The motor started fine. When put in forward gear and under load, the motor bogged down. I could get maybe 3k rpm max. When in neutral:shifting from zero to full throttle, the motor will scream to 6k rpms. When bogged down under full load, full throttle, I can pull the manual choke out partially while underway and get to 5500rpm and run beautifully. Push the choke back in and I slow immediately back to 3k rpm. What should be my next step(s) to sort this out? Thanks! Todd"

"Most probable cause is gooed up carburators. One or more of the carbs is not getting enough fuel and when you operate the choke, it increases the amount of fuel that they get. That is a classic way to determine if the carbs are a problem.
If you continue to run it that way, it is not good for the motor and one or more of your spark plugs will be getting fouled from too much fuel.

If your friend did run it dry, he probably did not drain the carburators. Running it dry still leaves some fuel in all of the carbs, especially the bottom one.

If you are mechanically inclined and want to clean the carbs yourself, I highly recommend purchasing a Honda Shop Manual to step you through the process.

Once you get everything running, be sure to use a fuel treatment like Sea Foam or Pri-G continually in your fuel to help keep everything clean and keep the fuel from going bad."

Thanks Mike. I do have a manual and will tackle the carbs. I thought I would first add some fuel treatment and maybe try to fill the fuel filter with some carb and choke cleaner to attempt a "quick fix".
