MY 2000 15 HP honda outboard had no spark. I cleaned the carb & fuel filter check the gas lines and fuel pump.
I replaced the pulser coil, replaced the regulator, installed the high output charging coil. BZought a new Ign coil
the motor now starts but runs poorly and stalls. I reversed the spark plug wires and it runs poorly and then stalls with no differance which way i have the spark plug wires. The two ign coils test about the same Old and new but neither test within the results per the book. Primary tabs old >9 ohms New 1 ohm supposed the test at 8.01 to 9.79 ohms. Secondary old 29.4 on the 200 k scale new 27.8 on the same scale supposed to be 8.01-9.79 ohms
the only thing i have not replaced is the exciter coil and the control unit module?? I really don't know why it does not make a differance when i switch spark plug wires?? Clovis CA Help Please?

I just looked at the parts diagram. I think it's a wasted spark setup.
I don't see how the coil can do anything but fire them both at the same time.

The coil has 2 sides one for each spark plug the motor is ground (which might somehow be the problem)
the spark needs to br 180 degress apart in order to run. I will have to really inspect the wiring to make sure everything is properly grounded. Thank you I appreciate it very much :)

If engine starts and runs pull 1 plug wire at a time with plastic pliers, cylinder drop test!!This could be a thread for Hondadude, daniel

Both plugs should fire at the same time. If you have not changed the plugs, do so. Only use NGK's. If you do mostly trolling, use DR5HS. They will not foul as quickly as the recommended plugs. If you use it normally....mostly mid to high speed, use the recommended DR6HS.

One other thing you can check are the connectors at the CDI. Sometimes they have connection issues and sometimes the connection issues are in the CDI unit. Pull the connectors apart and clean the contacts and give each pin a slight twist with needle nose....not too much that the connectors will not go back together, but enough to increase the strength of the connection.

Also, make sure the timing marks line up properly. If just one tooth off, the motor will not run correctly.

Many questions....
Is this motor new to you?
Did it run ok for you in the past?
When was the last time it ran good?
Why did you clean the carburetor?
Did you totally disassemble and make sure there was flow through the idle circuit to the little pin holes at the top of the rear of the carburetor's verturi?
If it was dirty, where did you set the idle mixture screw (pilot screw)?

Mike

By the way, the charge coil and regulator have nothing to do with the way the engine runs. All they do is charge an external battery.

Thank you so much Mike i really appreciate it. I am surprised to find that both plugs do fire at the same time.
I have had this motor for 10 years and it has been great until now. I have a Suzuki DT150 as my main motor and the lower unoit went out (no forward working gear) and they are hard to fidn at a reasonable price. So I have
been getting by using my honda to get around. for afew years now. I was up at a lake in May and the wind came up blowing around 50 MPH our anchor did not hold so i decided to leave and had to travel across the lake in truly terrible conitions at 2 AM. That was the last time the motor worked pretty much at all. I cleaned the carb because when i drained the carb the gas was very weird, i know my gas is old but i did treat it. I had replaced the ign coil thinking that was the problem with no results and decided to take apart and clean the carb. Honestly it was fine I found nothing. The pulser coil was cracked so i replaced it. I often camp for days on my boat so i had been wanting to upgrade the 6 amp charging coil for a long time and i felt the regulator was bad because the motor had not been charging my batteries like it used to. I could not find an idle mix screw on the carb like there is on my Honda 5 hp carb. Only adustment is for the idle speed. I appreciate you very much pointing that out and if i take it apart again I will be sure to pay attention to that Thank you. I will also check the timing marks.
I already ordered a new CDI would be nice to have an extra one anyway in case the need arises. Today the engine would Not even start yesterday it started but ran poorly for awhile then died. I will buy new plugs as well Thank you very Much for taking your time. Another person told me both plugs fire at the same time and I refused to believe it I guess i owe him and apology :) Thank you very much Daniel
