"2000 FICHT 225 will occasionally crank but not start. Engine turns over but will not fire, after several attempts it will begin to catch and sounds like it wants to fire, then a few more attempts and the engine fires up. This is over the course of about 30 minutes, resting the starter in between cranking. Motor runs fine once started. After start I can turn the motor off and crank it right up without any problem. This usually happens after sitting a few days but did happen once after shutting the motor off for a couple hours.

Other times, engine fires up after two cranks no problem.

I had my mechanic take a look and check the motor out, of course when he checked it the motor started fine that day so he was not able to duplicate the problem.

No codes
Checked all battery connections
Checked all fuses
Replaced start solenoid
Replaced start battery

Any ideas?? I am being told I may need to have the EMM rebuilt?? Is that done by DFI (can't remember the company name)? Anything else to check before spending the bucks on the EMM??"

"Clean all ground connections,

"Clean all ground connections, including the one for the EMM. Attach a voltmeter where the + goes into the IMM (red cable), and crank the engine. (install the cable before attempting to crank!) If voltage drops below 10,5 Volts during cranking, You have a 'battery discharge' problem.
Before starting, pump up the primer bulb, put key 'on' and wait for the high pressure pump to stop before attempting to crank."

"This is one failure mode of the EMM. The early Ficht EMM's had thin circuit boards that are prone to traces cracking. Once warmed up ever so slightly, the metal expands and makes contact. DFI technologies does rebuild EMM's. I think they will also test them for you. http://www.dfitechnologies.com/

I remember reading somewhere that the folks that founded DFI technologies were some of the Ficht engineers laid off when OMC went bankrupt."

"this eng,in my opinion,..cannot be repaired,'under the shade tree'..this is a modern,complex unit,that must be put on a laptop comp,to diagnose properly,erase codes,and repair...fuel inj eng's are wonderful,...but,IN MY OPINION,..are NOT to be 'tinkered'w.in the backyard.THe days,of a quick .carb clean,new pwr pack,are long gone in 2008...."

"Appreciate the inputs. Agree about laptop diagnosis and "shade tree" repairs -- just wondering if others have seen this problem or could shed any more light on the problem. At this point, laptop diagnosis does not ID any problems/codes, so it's hard to troubleshoot. The mechanic as yet has not duplicated the problem. At this point, he needs to duplicate the problem on start so he can troubleshoot and possibly ID the problem. But, in the mean time if there is a few things I can easily check, like corosion at connections to the EMM etc it might help."
