2000 Evinrude 70hp four stroke no reverse

I bought a 2000 Evinrude 70hp fuel injected four stroke, problem is it wouldn't shift into reverse. So I removed my control cable, grabbed the lever by hand and all of sudden thunk in went into reverse. Now its stuck there and I cant get it to neutral. I suppect the prior owner had this problem since I noticed the control cable had a bend to it, like someone pushed hard on it before to get it into/out of gear. What is the next path to troubleshooting this, I am a mechanic, but not expierenced with outboards?

Thanks, Randy

first go get yourself a service manual, when you are pushing the shift lever on the motor to come out of reverse spin the prop at the same time this should work for you. you need to spin the prop when shifting the motor if you find the motor now shifts into fwd and reverse easily it may just be a cable adjustment. the way to adjusts the able will also be found in the service manual.

I've never had one of these apart but if it was mine I'd get a good OEM factory service manual. This mtr was built by Suzuki so you may want to also post a thread on that part of this forum.

I have a good service manual. I did try turning the prop while shifting no luck. So, I disassembled the gearbox. I'm not positive but it looks like I went past reverse on the cam (stop pin on rod bent a little), then the pin fell under the cam. Locking it past reverse and ever going forward impossible. Why it was so hard to shift to reverse to start with I dont know, but when if finally shifted, I pushed to hard and went past reverse. I had the cables unhooked and was pushing with my hand on the lever for the shift rod. Why evinrude puts the stop pin on the rod so close to past center on the pin I dont know, or why there is not a stop on the end of the cam to stop the pin from overrunning the cam? Anybody have this experience or any information?
