2000 ELPTO 50HP grinding when trying to shift into reverse

I have a 2000 Mercury ELPTO 50HP that engages fine in forward but instead of shifting into reverse, just grinds. I'm not the mechanic on this one but someone looked at it and said the gears themselves were fine. I found articles that mention the alignment of things when you put it back together (did take the lower unit off). I've also had suggestions to replace the entire lower unit, but if it's just an alignment problem, this won't fix it anyway.
Does anyone have recommendations on what could cause this? Or, more importantly what my next steps of troubleshooting should be?
Thanks!

It could just be a problem with the adjustment of the selector cable. If it is adjusted one way too far it will pull (or push) into forward gear nicely, but only barely engage with reverse and therefore the dog clutch will just skip across the gears making the sound you describe. There is normally an adjustment at both ends of the cable. First determine which way selects reverse and then extend the cable in that direction.
