Hey Guys,

I have found an oil leak in the oil pressure alarm switch on my 2000 7.4L MPI. The leak appeared to be where the stud/nut enters the switch. I tried to tighten the nut/stud and have made the leak much worse. This can be seen in the first picture.

When looking up the part number, I found a much different looking switch which can be seen in the second picture.


my first question is whether the switch I have found will work as a replacement. I am thinking they changed the design so the same problem does not happen again. my second question about changing it out. Is it a simple unscrew the old switch and screw in the new one or should I be expecting much more? Should I be expecting to dump a bunch of oil when I remove the old switch?

What it looks like doesn't matter. What does is the thread size (1/8" NPT) and the electrical configuration of the switch (most are NC SPST switches) and the pressure where it switches. It also has to fit in the available space.

As far as the change out, you will get some drops to maybe an ounce - a rag or small cup should catch it just fine. Most recommend omitting any thread sealant to eliminate electrical continuity.

i looked up the part number in my service manual and this is the current part with the same number. I can only assume it will have the same thread. I am glad you mentioned not putting any thread sealant on it. that is a question I had but forgot to ask.

the current electrical connection is a male/female spade type connector. The new part looks like it is a screw terminal on the new part. I planned on just putting a different connection on the sending wire. Is this a bad idea?

if the old switch is as pictured, it should have a ring end, not a spade. the new one, as pictured, looks like it has a screw terminal and should fit the existing ring just fine. if not, you will have to change the terminal on the end of the wire to match it.
 
yeah, no teflon tape on the pipe threads that need to conduct electricity. I have gotten away with some PST on the threads, however. Oil leaks are a common issue with oil pressure switches, cars and boats alike.
