2000 50hp 4 stroke cuts out

2000 50hp 4 stroke. It runs great unless I open it up. If I run at 4000 RPMs it will run for days however when I open it up it will run at 5000 (max) for about a minute then it is almost like one cylinder shuts out my RPMs drop down to 4000 or maybe 4200 my speed goes from 30 to about 25. If I back off and let it idle I can hear a pinging noise. After about 25 or 30 seconds the pinging stops and the motor is running fine again.

I change out all plugs and the fuel filter but it still does it. Any other suggestions would be great!

I'm going to guess that "ping" you are hearing is actually the fuel pump "clicking" because it is fuel starved. To test this theory you can idle the motor, disconnect the fuel line and you should hear a similar sound as the gas runs out.

Your symptom is indicative of a fuel restriction, not severe since you can make 4000 rpms, but enough to restrict it past that point.

It could be a toasted bladder in the fuel pump but I would investigate prior to that. You noted you changed the fuel filter so check out the fuel line (replace if old/deteriorated), and check the tank. A plugged vent or toasted anti-siphon valve would be the leading contenders as the culprit...

Thanks! I kind of figured it was something with gas but really wasn't sure about that ping noise that kind of scared me. I will go through everything and check it out later this week.
