"Would someone point me towards a diagram for the cooling system of a 2000 5.7 carbed w a bravo 3 outdrive. It is raw water cooled.
Maybe some troubleshooting tips. It runs cool at idle 160-170, but temp goes up as soon as u get on plane and start cruising. The raw water pickup is thru the hull, not the leg.
On the trailer runnin it w a garden hose-toilet plunger it seemed to be pumpin plenty of water at idle and the manifolds were barely warm to the touch.
It was a friends dads boat (his dad passed away) and sat on a lift for about 2 years. Got filled w rainwater, then drained and sat for another year or so. I got it running for him (lots of new parts and many bad electrical connections) and he took it out yest, but was gettin hot.
Btw, we r in south florida, we dont winterize"

"So you opened up the raw pump

"So you opened up the raw pump to see if the impeller is ok, or maybe change it seeing as it sat so long?

Then maybe open the t-stat housing and maybe change out the t-stat.

Do those 2 things. Run it again on the water. If fixed ok if not then, the power steering cooler, run it on the water still overheating, then the risers, they got to be checked next, while your in there check the flappers / shutters."

What I did with my thru hull on my 5.7 MIE

What is not visible in the photo is that the red valve handle is for a garden hose "bib". I was not able to find a bronze one, so I replace the brass one in the photo every other season.

I connect a short length of garden hose to the bib, put it in a 5 gal pail and flush my cooling system on a regular basis. Also very handy way for me to winterize the system with antifreeze ( its FWC).

The strainer is external..

"Thanx ghost for the pic, and all for the advice.

Havent touched anything in the cooling system yet. My buddy has a kid that'll do the work, i just gotta point him in the right direction.

Robert, thats a cool setup."

"i talked to the guy today. Story changed a bit. He said it would run about 180 when cruising, but at WFO it would get hot real quick. I havent looked at it yet."

"180 for a RWC engine at cruis

"180 for a RWC engine at cruise is too hot. It is one of two scenarios...
1) wrong T'stat
2) plugged up engine.

Either case, at 180 degrees in salt water, the minerals in the water will precipitate out and collect in the engine causing the cooling system to degrade further."
