"I am the new owner of a used boat with a 4.3L Penta with fuel injection. I ran it for the first time this weekend. It started easily and ran great for about an hour. After idling through a canal to an adjacent lake, i powered up to tow a skiier. The motor hesitated and backfired at about 1600RPM, until i backed it down to idle. Temp is normal and nothing was on the cooling intake...Any ideas?"

"Thank you sir! I ended up taking it to a local boat mechanic who is also a Penta dealer. They are doing a 2-hour courtesy check on the boat to find any potential issues. He said he thought, among other unrelated issues, that the high pressure fuel pump was starting to go bad. It explained why is was getting enough fuel at low RPM, but cutting out at higher RPM.
I guess i better start looking for a new one!
