"Changed impeller and everything o.k.until we had to re-align lower unit then noticed washer from shift rod was missing but was there when we 1st put it in.Checked all around and in boat in case we dropped it then we thought it might be lodged in shift rod shaft tunnel. Probed tunnel with magnet and a wire with no luck. What does this washer do and what would be the best way to check to see if it still in tunnel? Does this have any effect on performance of motor? Regards, John"

"Hi John, the washer helps to lift the hook assembly in forward gear, so that if your outboard hits an underwater object it tilts up and will reduce the amount of damage, and when in reverse lowers the hook assembly and locks the tilt and stops the outboard from trying to climb out of the water,
So simply YES its an important part, though it will not affect forward performance, it will affect reverse.
Just replace it with a m5 or an m6 washer.

"Hi James! Thanks for quick reply. So that washer is important. My only problem is I have no idea where the original washer went as we didn,t see it fall out of shaft tunnel and probing tunnel didn,t produce anything either. Is there any chance the washer could be lodged at the top of shaft tunnel and any tips how I could find out? Thanks ,John"
