"I recently had the motor repaired on my 1992 200 Johnson. The mechanic had to remove the starter when working on it. I got the boat back and the motor runs great, but when I try and start it it "grinds" when cranked. I bought some automotive shims and tried shimming it 50 different ways to get it to stop, but it still grinds. If I leave the bolts slightly loose it cranks fine, but the moment I tighten them it grinds again. Anyone run across this before? Thanks."

"If what you speak of is that the bendix gear is jamming tightly against the flywheels teeth, first disconnect the battery to avoid injury.

Now, manually turn the starter shaft and engage the bendix gear. If the starter is the type that incorporates three retaining bolts (one front, two side), install the shims between the starter and the powerhead on the top side bolt only untill the proper clearance is obtained.

This method has always worked for me, hopefully it solves your problem."
