When starting the engine runs but wants to die and even after warming up it still wants to die . When trying to plane the boat i can only get it up to 2000 rpms. its a 1985 motor. i checked the carbs even though they say thats the last thing you want to check. Found 3 air vent jets for the float bowls missing in the carbs. Even at full throttle it wont plane and stays around 2000 rpms. Poor spark or something. Im new to a outboard motor. I can rebuild just about anything i put my hands on so i know if someone helps me i can do this... HELP HELP HELP.
P.S. sorry for the long post just frustrated

Ok, you need to start with the basics - get the compression checked - no sense trying adjustments etc if she has a bad cylinder or 2.

If the compression is good (somewhat over 100 psi on all cylinders with no more than 10-15 psi difference between them), then get out the timing light and make sure all cylinders are sparking.

Then if compression and spark is good you know the problem must be in the fuel system - and carb on an older motor that may have been sitting are a "prime" candidate.

Merc went through about a zillon carb models with it's V6's over the years - not all of them had the same jets in all models - they may have had common carb bodies but on model "x" they never even installed a back draft jet so that threaded hole is "empty" - just because the hole is there doesn't mean that model requires a jet to be threaded into it.

So, if you are going to work on it yourself, get a manual specific to that exact model - in some cases Seloc's is just not enough....
