"Hi all. I have a 2001 200 hp 2-stroke engine. Yesterday I went to start it, and nothing. I removed engine cover and noticed that the starter gear was spinning, but would not raise. After checking connections and battery levels, it still would not engage. I proceeded to tap the starter lightly, but it did not help. Instead, now the piece does not spin and I have a "ticking/tapping"
noise coming from one of the square packs located next to the starter. Did I make things worse? What could be the problem? Thanks."

"Jackson, those "sqare pac

"Jackson, those "sqare packs" are your voltage regulators. And although the sound may seem to be coming from them, it is more likely that you are hearing a sound from your starter solenoid which should be mounted directly below them.

These do fail, and are often accompanied by a clicking noise when they do. This is a relatively inexpensive part only requiring a few minutes to change.

It can be tested by jumping the two main posts (battery feed to the starter feed post) or for less than an hours labour and about 40 bucks for the part a Merc dealer can hook you right up..."
