hot and check engine lights li

hot and check engine lights lit right from the start.Therefore motor switches into safety mode.(low rpm's)I disconnected sensor in portside head and hot light went out &check eng. stayed on.At this time safety mode allowed me to rev up engine.Seems intermitten.Any help would be appreciated
