"I just purchased a Ranger 396V with a 92 Model Merc 200 HP EFI. The motor runs great, but gets hot at idle. There are only a few spurts of water coming out the tell tale hole. At higher RPM the motor runs cool and there is a steady stream out the tell tale. The engine nevers gets hot enough for the warning to sound, but the gauge gets really close to the red line. Is this normal? The previous owner put an impeller in it last year."

"Scott,

There should be a steady stream from the telltale at all times. These engines are supposed to have thermostats that have a small by-pass hole in the top of the stat. Many after market stats do not have this feature. It seems to me that the problem is either clogged stats, or the wrong stats.

A friend of mine had this problem, and was unable to find the proper stats, so he just drilled a 1/8 inch hole on the top of the stat and solved the problem.

I do agree with ssparky about checking the head gasket, since you have been runing hot. Running hot can cause the gasket to fail, and it never hurts to check the impeller and the entire water pump either.

your motor sounds like normal

your motor sounds like normal it will not pee out telltale oem t stats do not have any bleed by holes it must reach 140 to open stats if worning horn is functioning properly (test by grounding tan wire going to harness from temp senders with key on horn will sound ) engine is obviously not running hot!

"Thanks for everyones feedback

"Thanks for everyones feedback. I installed a new water pump kit, removed and cleaned both Thermostats (no vent hole), flushed the system and now everything works fine."
