200 evinrude timimng problems

"earlier comments mention that

"earlier comments mention that he switched "everything" from the good motor. I assume this included the pp, but still leaves the possibility of the routing of the leads being too close to a plug wire or questionable amphenol connectors"

"I have seen the 'switchin

"I have seen the 'switching of components' above.
Might even be a fast way to ruin a good PP unless you have checked out the reason for failure first!
To solve the problem on this engine, one has to be systematic and not jump here and there.
It is a reason for the OEM workshop manual to list and explain all tests in detail and sequence. That is not always followed, unfortunately."

"Both power packs have been sw

"Both power packs have been switched before. I swapped them when I first got the boat in a attempt to fix the smoking problem. The power pack, stator, and trigger that was on the good motor is now on the bad motor and has been back on the good motor prior to this problem. Therefor, if I was going to ruin the power pack it would have already happened. I have all of my electronics from my problem motor on my good motor. I will finish putting it back together tomorrow and run the good motor to confirm that everything is still in working order. Im going to mark every cylinder on the flywheel and check for a possible double fire. Im going to do every possible test that is thrown my way as I am out of options."

"also,another thought,is shear

"also,another thought,is sheared/mis-aligned flywheel key,..AND,...timer magnet in fly wheel have moved.....just thought of that...i had to re-glue mine on MY 97-200......i would definately,ck that...on cdi's website,there is a drawing,for the actual alignment,..it is just a magnet ring,glued on,..when it spins,can give all kinds of hd-scratching prob's...swap flywheels and try.,compare locatiions of timer rings."

"Morten excuse my ignorance, b

"Morten excuse my ignorance, but how can you check if a motor is double firing??? if you can only point the timing light at one spot on the flywheen at the time..."

"If you connect to #1, you sho

"If you connect to #1, you should only be able to see the cyl#1 mark on the flywheel even if you move the light around to look for the other marks. The rest of the flywheel will be 'blur'. If you may see both 1 and 2 when just hooked to #1, they are firing at the same time.
I used to have a light with built in tach, and if double firing I got a double reading on the tach on that cyl. You may even use a multimeter with Hz and an induction wire and test. Wrap the wire a couple of turns around the plug wire and read the firing frequency. If double, you get a double reading."

"Any possibility the primary w

"Any possibility the primary wires from the pack to the coil are switched? If that pack is firing one slot too early it would kick and run bad. If the other hole that was switched fired later, it would just misfire, or fire late not making much power. This would show up on the test Morten outlined above for double firing. The only difference would be the wrong nubmer would show up."

"OK. I have tested timing for

"OK. I have tested timing for each cylinder and found that #2 was firing where #4 should have been. #6 was firing where it should. Because I have been hooking this motor up the same way every time since i bought it, i never thought to look at this and without marking TDC for each cylinder or knowing exactly how the wiring goes on these motors it would have never been found. After checking the wiring diagram in the manual I discovered that the primary wires for #2 and #4 were switched the whole time. I cant believe it. The motor runs great and idles wonderful. I thank everyone for their help as I could not have done it without. I hope this experience helps everyone as it has taught me a lesson. I will no longer go flying off the handle and start tearing things apart. It has worked for me in the past but it did not work in this case. I have grown from this experience and will handle my repairs in a completely different manner in the future. Once again thank you everyone. Eric."
