My Merc 2

"Hi, my first post!
My Merc 200 Blueband 20hp, (serial no. 9085792) would give my old arm a rest if it had an electric starter motor! But they seem as rare as hen's teeth, as well as conflicting info about which one will fit it. I have been offered a used 55-55601 with nine teeth from a 40hp unit, does anyone know if this will do the job? Or does someone know the exact one, (and where they are!) This will make my first boat, a vintage(?) Dolphin 17 (1972) GRP motor cruiser, "Slinky" very happy, (and my arm!). Regards, Carl, from UK"

"Carl, I'm thinking that the 20 had a ten tooth (large gear) starter. The part number is/was 50-76275T

It has been discontinued, but there is a couple places still around that have some old stock (do a web search for the part number).

The part was supreseded by 50-32411 according to one Merc source which would make the "much available" Arco 5374X an option provided the info that I have is correct."

Best regards,

"Hi Graham, I don't suppose you've had the oportunity to double check your response, but before I shell out $273 inc shipping to the UK I would like to be sure I'm buying the right one!
If you could check I would appreciate it. Many thanks again.

Carl"

"I got the cross reference fro

"I got the cross reference from a huge Merc dealer in Florida (BAM Marine).

They have helped me out with retrofit information in the past and so far all has worked out, sometimes with a slight bit of "tweaking".

But Merc themself will not come right out and say this, or that, will work, so it's always a slight gamble.

In your case I would buy from a seller that will take a return if it won't fit and be prepared to eat the shipping cost.

I have never done this particular swap so can not attest to if it will work or not, or how much "fiddling" it would take. The (gear) does appear to the correct one to marry up with the flywheel, you just may have to customize the mounting of the unit to some extent (maybe - it also appears the same from the pics I have compared).

Sorry I can't be more sure than that."
