20 horse Johnson HELP

I just bought a boat and motor gentleman I got it from told me it was a 72 model motor Johnson 20 hp I took it out first time today in water I never could get it to start it is a pull start but when it was loaded up we pulled rope once and it fired right up I immediately shut it off not wanting to damage anything so I tiresome more time on land I pulled rope once it fired right up now both time I had it in neutral position but propelar was rotating very fast when it started now I put it back in river it would not start to save my life but once again would fire off.. HELP what do I need to do
 
Relax and put the motor on a work stand.-------Do a compression test and check to make sure the spark will jump a gap of 1/4" or more on both plug wires.----Install a new impeller before taking it out on the water !
 
Ok thank you but wouldn't I need to check the linkage to to see if it was off
