2 stroke or 4 stroke

I bought a used Mercury 2003 5

I bought a used Mercury 2003 50hp 3 cyl. outboard motor w/o a manual. I need to order a manual and some parts but I don't know if I have a 2 or 4 stroke motor. I was told that just because I don't mix the oil and gas doesn't always mean its a 4 stroke. My serial # is OT669649. 2003 50 ELPTO. Please help.

ELPTO = Electric Start-Long Shaft-Power Trim-Oil Injected
That means you have a 2 stroke with an oil tank that you must keep TCW3 rated oil in.

I was needing to know if I have a two or four stroke. I just boughta 9.9 hp mariner. It is a pull start. I dont know much about it other than that. Is there a way to tell so I can get the correct oil. and what is the ratio I should use?

and et again I pulled a newbie.... that serial number was (653) s11271. I was reading other post and seen that the s means short... But thats all I have found.

653 S 112171 is a good serial for a 2 stroke, Yamaha built 20 horse, 1977 model, not a 9.9

The Yamaha code 653 is exclusive to the 20 and I would say there is zero chance they put the wrong code on a motor.

For it to be a 9.9 would need a code of 682.

If this really is a 20 how could this happen or why would someone do it??

Because there are a number of restricted horsepower lakes out there (10 horse or less) and guys that just can't play by the rules.

It is a popular deception to re-decal a 15 horse to a 9.9 (because the 15 is exactly the same size etc), but this would be the first 20 horse that I was personally aware of."
