2 Stroke Mercury 40 HP manual start

"I have a 40 HP mercury outboard (manual start) that had one of the magnets break up on the flywheel.

I managed to find a used replacement flywheel but noticed that the replacement had a thin stainless steel ring covering the magnets which the original one never had.

My question is, is this an improvement to the the ones without the ring to help prevent the magnets detaching or is it a different type of flywheel? Also, I would have thought that a steel ring would affect the magnetic field?

The new flywheel fits Ok and the motor turns fine but when I try to start the motor it kicks back pulling the starter cord out of your hand. It's trying to start but it's like the ignition timing is out?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated."

"lets get a timing light on the #1 cyl, crank engine and check timing. Don't have a clue about the ring, need serial number. The flywheel could be indexted wrong, but still need serial number/year. The old magnet can be re-attached if need be."

The serial number is OG150246, not sure about the year. I can't re-attach the old magnet as it broke up and was lost. If it helps, there is a number on the replacement flywheel, 261-859233C

I'm not sure. Is the inner hub the ring magnet in the middle of the flywheel (please excuse my ignorance)!

I just undid the flywheel nut and used a flywheel puller to lift of the flywheel.

"sounds like you did it right, the inner hub can be removed, clocked, and reinstalled to the outer flywheel in the wrong position. This is why we need to put a timing light on the engine, spin it over by hand and check to make sure #1 is firing at about 3-5 degrees before top dead center."
