1999 mercury 225 stalling

I thought I had already posted this but anyway I am thinking about buying a used boat with mercury 225 owner states motor has a bad sensor and will run fine with the engine cover off when on the motor seems to be choked and stalls he also states the compression is 125psi on all cylinders and i can check it myself I can get a deal but does this sound like a bad sensor or something else ps motor is fuel injected any help appreciated

The 225 EFI's are a very decent motor.

And the issue could just as easily be the result of an exhaust leak as a bad sensor.

If you are serious about the motor (or the boat motor combo) make a condition of the sale a satisfactory "tech check" which you will pay for.

Then haul her down to your local Merc dealer and let them "plug it in" - for the cost of an hours labour they can give you printout of the motor - from that you can determine it's value as part of the combo....

60 or 70 bucks for the check could alert you to hundreds of dollars of potential repairs OR let you know that it may be a simple fix...
