1999 Johnson 90 J90PLEEB VRO Question

Good Morning,
I just joined the Boat Repair Forum. My question is; I have a 1999 Johnson J90PLEEB 90hp Outboard Motor and it is mounted on a 1999 Sea Hunt Escape 175, the compartment that contains the VRO oil supply tank is covered in black oily residue, why? The compartment looks like it has had a continual oil leak. The tank has the oil return port plugged. Does this engine have an oil return hose that might not be plugged in to the tank? If so, from where would the oil return hose originate on the engine? Thank you for your help.

Maybe it is not the proper tank for your model motor.------You should make sure your VRO system is working properly.----Do not run engine without checking / testing pump oil output.

Thank you. I just bought the boat, motor, and trailer from the original owner. He said everything on the boat is original from the factory. His explanation for the oily compartment was his inability to not spill the oil when he was replenishing the oil tank. I guess after 21 years of "spilling" oil there would be a considerable mess.
Thank you again.

Why sure ----But I said that the DIRECT injected models ( FICHT ) of that year may have had an oil return line.-----Up to you to determine if this oil tank is in fact the proper original one for your motor.----After 21 years of service a wise owner would do the oil output test on a VRO unit !!!!

I would hope so. FICHT motors, they are fuel injected, correct? This is a carburetor motor. So, I am guessing, most likely no oil return line???

The FICHT motor oiling systems shows a return line.-----The carbureted motors like yours do not show an oil return line.
