1999 Johnson 5hp Model J5REEC poor water flow from cooling system

I have had this unit for about 6 months now. I have checked the impeller is in great shape. Tried blowing thru the water tube from both directions with very poor flow to the other side. is the upper grommet bad? How do I remove and replace?
 
I think this is rebadged Suzuki.

Possibly the upper grommet but the design is different from earlier genuine Johnsons and Evinrudes like my 6hp. Perhaps more likely that the passages at the top of the leg are blocked.

Your motor is covered by the manual on The Boatinfo website....... but sorry this forum won't allow a link.

The manual says remove the top cover, the rewind starter, the fuel tank, carburetor, flywheel, ignition coil and associated components then unbolt the power head. (6 bolts)

I suspect that is a load of nonsense and that you will be able to unbolt and remove the power head with most, if not all, of the other stuff still in attached.

You say you have tried blowing through the water tube in both directions. How do you blow into it from the top without removing the power head?


Not just the telltale blocked is it ???

No. I was just applying compressed air into the water outlet under the power head. I have not tried taking the power head off yet. I think that is the next step. Thanks for the reply.

When you say the "water outlet under the power head" you presumably mean the "telltale" ?

If the tell tale itself is not blocked air blown in there should pass both ways . Though the engine cooling system ond out via the exhaust outlet and back pressure relief ports etc. and also down the water tube to the water pump and out via the water inlet screen. Personally I'd use water connected via the flushing connection rather than compressed air

If air, or water, wont flow in either direction from the telltale, or the flushing connection, it strongly indicates that the water channels at the top of the exhaust housing are blocked
