" I have a 1999 Outboard Johnson OceanPro 200HP and have two problems that I am not sure are due to an ignition issue or an engine issue. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
1 - After running the engine and turning the ignition key to the off position, the engine continues to run in a highly degraded mode, even though the ignition is in the off position.
2 - The security feature that is supossed to shut the engine off if the ignition is not pushed in does not function at all. The engine starts and stops (sometimes) just fine without engaging the security clip on the ignition.

The ignition was replaced by your truly after the engine not shutting off problem arose. Could there be an issue with the ignition wiring that would cause these issues, or is it something more involved?

Thanks for your time and assistance "

"Dermott.... When you turn the key off, the engine is continuing to run on 3 cylinders. The ignition is actually a magneto type setup whereas when you turn the key to the off position, you short out the ignition via the raised boss terminal (M) on the ignition switch that the black/yellow wire connects to, (pack kill circuit) through the internal portion of the ignition switch to the plain black wire (the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch) to ground.

Check the connections back at the engine, especially the black/yellow wires that lead to the powerpack. You may need to unbolt the pack to see all of them. It's possible that one of the wires has a break, or that the pin/socket within the rubber connectors has backed out.

The kill circuit for the ignition is: At the engine, a black wire from ground to the powerpack assy. Two black/yellow (usually two) from the pack to the main red electrical connector on the engine side. A black/yellow (one wire) on the other side of that main electrical plug leads to the raised boss (M) on the ignition switch. A plain black wire on the other (M) at the switch leads to ground.

The security feature.... If you're speaking of the kill switch that would have a lanyard attached to it and to yourself, the wiring should be: Yellow/Black wire to one side of the kill switch. The other side of the kill switch to ground. It's possible that you have a powerpack internal problem, but lets hope not.
